Fred Johnson III, a respected history professor at Hope College in Holland, has died following a sudden medical emergency. College officials confirmed that Dr. Johnson suffered a massive heart attack during a lecture and passed away on February 27. His death has sent shockwaves through students, faculty, and alumni who knew him as a transformative educator.

Dr. Johnson served as the Guy Vander Jagt ’53 Professor of History and had been part of the Hope College faculty since 2000. He was widely regarded as a gifted scholar, author, and award-winning public speaker, known for bringing history to life through powerful storytelling and lived context. Colleagues often described him as a legend in the classroom whose presence elevated every room he entered.

Beyond campus, Fred Johnson III was deeply involved in the Hope-Western Prison Education Program, where he taught and mentored incarcerated students with compassion and purpose. He viewed education as a calling grounded in service, faith, and excellence. He was also an active member of Macatawa Toastmasters, where he was admired for his eloquence and thoughtful writing.

Hope College announced that a memorial service will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Dimnent Memorial Chapel. Though Fred Johnson III has died, his legacy as an educator and mentor will continue to shape lives across Holland and far beyond.
